*** The information on this page reflects the timeline for applications for the 26-27 academic year, which closed on January 4, 2026.***

Overview

Undergraduate groups seeking to become a registered student organization must attend a New Group Info Session and then submit the Intent to Register Application by January 4, 2026. Once the application period closes, submissions will be reviewed by our Student Organization Review Committee, with decisions expected by January 31. Groups that are provisionally approved will be notified by email via Yale Connect. In early February, groups will be assigned a Student Organization Consultant (SOC) to lead them through the onboarding process throughout the remainder of the spring semester. Before creating a student organization Yale Connnect portal, groups are required to complete a New Org Training session.

Undergraduate groups should register with the Yale College Dean’s Office if they:

  • Conduct meetings periodically.
  • Sponsor activities on the campus of Yale University.
  • Provide a service for or by Yale undergraduates.
  • Operate within a residential college that sponsors extracurricular events open to the Yale community.
  • Raise funds within the University for charitable purposes.

If you decide to register, your organization must satisfy these conditions:

  • If you wish to use Yale in your name/logo, you are required to indicate in your name/logo that you are a student organization. We suggest using words such as: undergraduate organization, student organization, student alliance, student society, or student association. See official licensing guidelines here.
  • All officers/board members of the organization must be Yale College students, as described in the Undergraduate Regulations.
  • All organizations must have a minimum of 5 undergraduate members.
  • If you will be a part of or affiliated with a national or local organization (e.g. Key Club, Moot Court, Greek orgs., etc.), you must comply with the Regulations for Outside Organization Sponsorship.
  • Student organizations must operate in accordance with Yale’s inclusion policy as listed in the Undergraduate Regulations for Organizations.
    • However, an exception regarding gender may be granted for a single-gender, philanthropic Greek letter chapter in good standing with their national organization. The chapter must be affiliated with a Yale campus entity, such as Dwight Hall, the Chaplain’s Office, or a cultural center.

Certain organizations may not be eligible for registration as student organizations or may require additional approval.

The list below provides examples of some but not all such organizations and the necessary steps to take to complete registration.

  • Club sports or groups that compete athletically must register with the Office of Club Sports.
  • All religious organizations must have the approval of Yale’s Chaplain’s Office before their registration can be approved by the Yale College Dean’s Office.
  • Organizations that are established for the purpose of selling or renting items or paying students cannot be registered student organizations. Such organizations may be able to operate as Associated Student Agencies and should consult with the business manager of the Associated Student Agencies
  • Graduate or professional students can seek more information about starting a non-undergraduate student group here.
